Community Case Study

Bobette Ta-min, aged 69

From severe arthritis symptoms to fewer flare-ups, with Cook for Health

The first time we met Bobette was at a community meal, a monthly Cook for Good event at which 60 residents enjoy a three course lunch, cooked by one of our corporate teams. Bobette came as a guest of another resident, and quickly took up our invitation to become a Pantry member.

When chatting to our community manager Martha one day, Bobette explained that she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, and was having frequent flare-ups. Martha immediately suggested that she sign up for Cook for Health, our six-month programme which aims to help people manage medical conditions through healthy food and intuitive cooking.

Bobette was keen to do anything she could to reduce her symptoms, and threw herself into the programme. She loved learning about the impact that food has on the gut, and the knock-on effect that has on our health, and was reassured that it was run by two doctors.

By the end of the course, Bobette was incorporating more plant-based food into her diet, and meeting up to cook with a couple of friends she had made along the way. And critically, her condition had improved.

She says: “The course wasn’t preachy, but it really helped us understand what’s good for us, and gave us great recipes to cook from. I’m certainly more mindful when I go shopping now about what I put in my basket, and have fewer inflammatory flare-ups. It’s brilliant.”
