Community Case Study
Thu Pham, aged 35
From Community Brigade, to paid shifts with us, to working elsewhere
One of our first Pantry members, Thu has been part of the Cook for Good story since we first arrived at the Priory Green estate. When we met her, she was at a bit of a crossroads – and now, thanks to her hard work and our support, she’s on an exciting new path.
When Thu became a mother, and was keen to find a job that she could fit around her family, our community manager Martha encouraged her to apply for our Community Brigade training and work experience course. The six-month programme included in-kitchen skills and cooking training, front-of-house masterclasses and a food safety qualification.
After sailing through the course, Thu became a paid member of our kitchen team, working to support our chefs at corporate events. She also took on a paid catering role at Havas, supported by Genuine Dining.
However, Thu’s time in the Brigade gave her more than just catering and hospitality skills. It also helped her believe in herself, which in turn helped her take an even braver step – into accountancy. With Martha’s support, Thu applied for an accountancy course, and was accepted.
She is now working at The Maya Centre whilst pursuing her qualifications, with the goal of one day opening her own practice.
As Thu says, “I don’t know where I would be without Cook for Good. The training and support I’ve received gave me the confidence to be brave and follow my dreams.”
